Mile 979: Rochelle, IL

We once again, woke up enjoyed coffee with the family and took off towards Rochelle. Today, there was a big storm coming and we wanted to make sure we made it to our location before the storm hit us.

So we cruised on over to Rochelle and just a few miles outside the town the dark clouds rolled in, and there was no escaping: the storm was here.

Knowing I was close to shelter, it was amazing to be so exposed to everything. We braced ourselves as the rain came pouring down and slowly pedaled into town and under a nearby pavilion. I was so ecstatic, I love warm air and rain, and being part of it all.

When the storm passed we took a tour around Rochelle to spot out or place where we would camp. The town was small, but money had been poured into the parks and schools. There was bike path that went around Rochelle and as we bike around we could see the damage of the storm and the strength of the wind.

Hungry from our ride we took shelter at a local restaurant that served soup, steak, desert, corn, potatoes for $9.00 and stuffed ourselves.  The staff was so sweet and a few people stopped to ask us questions. Afterwards, we found a local tavern where we could watch the Stanley Cup (Chicago Black hawks were playing after all)...and we enjoyed the not so lovely:) locals who, unaware that we were cyclists, commented on cycling and the ridiculousness of spandex, as my dad and I sat nearby...quite humorous.

Later we biked back to our new home, a concert venue in the park with a good overhand. Throughout the night we could hear the trains roar by and remnants of more storms to come.
